Waves

The last of my photos from a short trip to California a few months ago, these show some good-sized waves at Avila Beach.

Spokane Falls

I was in Spokane, in the east of Washington State once very briefly back in 1996. The only photo I'm posting is of the waterfall in the city.

Merry Christmas

I wish all my readers who celebrate it a Merry Christmas. I don't have a Christmas post, but here's a local snow-covered mountain for those stuck in the warm weather covering so much of the country.

More Avila Beach

Continuing with photos from Avila Beach in central California, it's rocky in places.
There were some good waves the day I was there.
I always look for shadows. The pier in the distance is the one from my previous post; I wandered down the beach from there.
Finally I liked the color of this rocky outcropping against the blue sky.

Avila Beach Pier

In the central coast of California you'll find the pretty Avila Beach, including this pier.

Long Island by Plane

Last week's photo from the air was taken as I was on a jet flying just north of Long Island, near New York City. It's 118 miles (190 km) long, and at its eastern end splits into two very distinct forks. I was very pleased to see and photograph this from the airplane, and was thinking about making it a Skywatch Friday post as I took the photo.

Pulpit Rock

Pulpit Rock makes a nice little hike when the winter's moved into the high country.

Cottonwood Pass, 1995

For Vintage Weekly, Here's a 1995 photo from Cottonwood Pass, in the mountains of Colorado. It was degraded and seriously discolored, so I changed it to B&W (which suits the mood) and did some restoration. It's not perfect but I was fairly pleased with the result.

Black Forest Park

I've posted from the local Black Forest Regional Park before, and I'm sure I'll do so again because it's easy to get to and is rather pretty.
The dogs love it too.
Unfortunately parts of it were burned in a massive wildfire a couple of years ago, but it won't stop us from visiting.

Park Dogs

These photos were taken on a short hike in the Black Forest regional park. Laika loves to explore and checks everything out...
Socks is older and just hangs out close to me.

Old Mountain Skies

From sometime in the mid-1990s, here's an old scanned photo for Skywatch Friday and Vintage Weekly. It's the Maroon Bells, near Aspen, Colorado.

TWA Museum, Kansas City

Another museum in the Kansas City area is the TWA Museum; we took my father there as he's interested in aviation.
It was interesting with lots of mementos from the airline, including these old log books.
It's worth a visit if you're in the area and enjoy seeing these types of things.

Peak Moods (5) - Unsettled

It's been a stormy couple of weeks - this photo was taken from our front porch.

KC WWI Museum

I'm going to break my usual rule of no more than a couple of photos per post as I walk you through the Liberty Memorial and the National World War I Museum, in Kansas City, Missouri. It's one of the region's must-visit attractions, and I give it a very high recommendation. As you approach, the Liberty Memorial, dedicated to the men and women who served in World War I, stands out.
It's an impressive tower, and you can go to the top. On the day we were there it was cold and windy, but the photos I posted last week of Union Station and the Kansas City skyline were taken from it.
On either side of this tower are a couple of large halls with various artwork and displays.
The core of the museum is underground, with various tanks...
... and artillery on display.
There are also many educational displays, and even a couple of life-size recreations of the trenches in which so many people perished.

Dogs & Snow

We've had a couple of snow storms lately. Last week we had 4 inches (10 cm), a small storm by our standards. Socks doesn't mind it with his thick fur.
But Laika isn't so sure, even wearing a jacket...
Then a couple of days ago we got a 15 inch (38 cm) fall, and it dwarfs them both. I wasn't going to make Laika stand outside while I took photos so here's little Socks.

Summer Storm

For Skywatch Friday, here's a leftover photo from a summer storm. I've posted other shots of this storm in the past.

Kansas City & Union Station

The Kansas City metropolitan area is split between the states of Kansas and Missouri, and when you're visiting you will switch back many times, often without noticing. Here's the downtown Kansas City skyline, taken from the Missouri side.
And some photos of the well-known Union Station; again this is on the Missouri side.

Delft 1977

My thoughts and prayers are with the French this morning after last night's terrible events in Paris. Here's a 1977 photo from the Dutch city of Delft.

First Snow

Photos taken this morning - this is very late for our first snow as it sometimes comes in September.

Pea Ridge (2)

Here are some more photo from the Pea Ridge civil war battleground, Arkansas. Some of the worst slaughter in the battle took place in these rocks as they were shelled by the cannon. It very eerie standing here.
The Trail of Tears, where Native Americans were forced to walk as they were forcibly removed from their lands, passes through the site - many of them walked over this exact spot in the woods. It's hard to imagine what they were feeling.
The whole area was very beautiful.
